"There was very little left to prove for Eric Morris at the G6 level."
TILLWATER, OK - After a historic season from North Texas, being ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time in program history, as well as finishing his season at 11-2, there was very little left to prove for Eric Morris at the G6 level.
Eric Morris began coaching as a graduate assistant for the Houston Cougars, where he remained for 2 years. Morris then accepted the wide receivers coach position at Washington State, under his former coach Mike Leach. Afterwards, he was the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech, then the full-on head coach at Incarnate Word University, then returned back to Washington State as offensive coordinator, and then finally was hired as head coach for the North Texas Mean Green.
He coached Incarnate Word to a 24-18 overall record as head coach, with 2 Southland Conference Championships. He also had success with North Texas, maintaining a record of 22-16 during his time there. Including a potential CFP run with North Texas this past season, finishing 11-2 and being defeated in the AAC Championship Game against Tulane before leaving for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Recruiting Through Relationships
Oklahoma State currently has 33 incoming transfer portal players, with the majority having played for Eric Morris before. Included in these transfers are 15 of North Texas’s best and most talented athletes following Morris to Stillwater, including Drew Mestemaker, Wyatt Young, Caleb Hawkins, Fatafehi Vailea II, Miles Coleman, and Ethan Wesloski, to name a few.
Morris has also signed former North Texas players and staff for the Pokes next season. Transfers Ayo Adeyi and Tyler Mercer were former North Texas talents who Morris maintained positive relationships with, which did wonders for Oklahoma State in the transfer portal. Eric Morris also brought over the majority of his North Texas staff, including Offensive Coordinator Sean Brophy, Defensive Coordinator Skyler Cassity, and General Manager Raj Murti.
247 Sports currently ranks Oklahoma State as the 2nd best transfer portal class of all teams, only being defeated by Penn State in a similar situation. Other notable transfer portal prospects for Oklahoma State are Justin Bowick (Illinois), Donovan Green (LSU), and Billy Walton III (SMU).
Changing The Narrative
The past 2 seasons haven't been kind to Oklahoma State. In 2024, Oklahoma State won their first 3 games against South Dakota State, Arkansas, and Tulsa, before sliding their next 9 games and finishing their season 3-9. A disappointing finish for a Cowboys team that finished 10-4 in 2023.
In 2025 the Cowboys weren’t much better, defeating UT Martin to begin the season before losing 11 straight games. Including a 12-19 loss to Tulsa in Stillwater, which resulted in the firing of Mike Gundy, who spent over 40 years both playing and coaching the Cowboys. After 20 years as head coach, Oklahoma State desperately needed a team-minded coach, as well as someone who could uplift this struggling program, and I believe Eric Morris is their guy!
Next Season For OSU
Oklahoma State has a similar schedule to last season, facing Tulsa and Oregon to open the season before opening conference play against the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe. I predict that Oklahoma State will finish 6-6 next season, reaching bowl eligibility for the first time since 2023. I don’t think they’ll make a run to the CFP, but it's certainly an improvement for a team like OSU that’s struggled in the past.
