"With continued offensive decline, the Cardinals opted to maximize financial flexibility and focus on a long-term rebuilding effort."
ST. LOUIS, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, trading future Hall of Famer Nolan Arenado to Arizona.
Arenado waived his no-trade clause to approve this deal. After several disappointing seasons and a noticeable decline in Arenado’s offensive production, the Cardinals decided it was time to move on from the veteran star and officially begin a rebuild centered around younger talent. In return, St. Louis received minor-league right-handed pitcher Jack Martinez, a 2025 eighth-round pick, along with cash considerations.
The D-backs will have control of Arenado for two remaining seasons, with $42 million dollars left on his contract. As part of the agreement, the Cardinals will be paying $31 million dollars of that remaining salary, significantly reducing their payroll commitments.
Arenado, who was dealt to the Cardinals in February 2021, now heads to his third major league team as his career swindles down. With continued offensive decline, the Cardinals opted to maximize financial flexibility and focus on a long-term rebuilding effort.
Arizona will now have yet another veteran mind in the clubhouse, bringing leadership, postseason experience, and elite defensive ability. Arenado, an eight-time Allstar, 10 time Gold Glove winner, six-time Platinum Glove winner and five-time Silver Slugger, joins a roster that is eager to contend for a World Series title. Arenado is heading into his 13th major league season this year and will look to rebound offensively and remain sound in the infield.
