"The win marked one of the largest comebacks in CFP history and sent Alabama into the quarterfinal round."

In a thrilling College Football Playoff first-round matchup Friday night, the No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide erased a 17-point deficit to defeat the No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners, 34–24, in Norman. The win marked one of the largest comebacks in CFP history and sent Alabama into the quarterfinal round.

Oklahoma’s Fast Start

Oklahoma came out firing, jumping to a 17–0 lead early in the second quarter. Quarterback John Mateer fueled the early surge, scoring once on the ground and later throwing a touchdown pass to Isaiah Sategna III. The Sooners also added a 51-yard field goal, capitalizing on Alabama’s early offensive struggles.

Through the first quarter and a half, Alabama failed to establish rhythm, going three-and-out on its first three possessions while Oklahoma controlled both the tempo and field position.

Momentum Swings Before Halftime

Alabama finally found life midway through the second quarter when quarterback Ty Simpson connected with Lotzeir Brooks on a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the Crimson Tide on the board. Moments later, a mishandled Oklahoma punt gave Alabama prime field position, leading to a field goal that cut the deficit to seven.

The defining moment of the first half came just before the break. Mateer threw an interception that was returned 50 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 17–17 and completely shifting momentum heading into halftime.

Alabama Takes Control

The Crimson Tide carried that momentum into the second half. On their opening drive of the third quarter, Simpson struck again, hitting Brooks for a 30-yard touchdown, giving Alabama its first lead of the night.

Alabama’s defense tightened, forcing stops while the offense continued to capitalize. A long field goal extended the lead as Alabama completed a 27-point unanswered run, turning a once-lopsided game into full Crimson Tide control.

Oklahoma’s Final Push Falls Short

Oklahoma responded early in the fourth quarter when Deion Burks hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass, trimming the deficit to three and briefly reviving the home crowd. However, critical mistakes proved costly. The Sooners missed two field goal attempts in the final minutes, eliminating their chances of a comeback.

Alabama added a late touchdown to seal the 34–24 victory.

Key Performances & Stats

What It Means
