Four Teams, One Ticket: Breaking Down the SEC Championship Scenarios

Jack McCartney••6 min read
"This weekend promises to deliver peak SEC chaos."

They say in the SEC, it just means more. So, let’s take a look at which of the top contenders want it most.

Four teams remain in the hunt for a trip to Atlanta:

No. 3 Texas A&M, undefeated in both conference and regular season play

No. 4 Georgia, whose only loss came against Alabama

No. 7 Ole Miss, with its lone loss to the Bulldogs

No. 10 Alabama, sitting at 9–2 with just one SEC loss to Oklahoma (their other loss was in Week 1 to Florida State)

With four top 10 teams all fighting for the same goal, this weekend promises to deliver peak SEC chaos.

Texas A&M: The Aggies in Control

The Aggies enter the final week with the nation’s No. 1 Strength of Record, measuring how impressive a team record is relative to its schedule. Their résumé includes wins over then-No. 8 Notre Dame (now No. 9), No. 20 LSU (now unranked and without a head coach), and No. 22 Missouri (also now unranked).

A&M closes the season with No. 16 Texas in the Lone Star Showdown. If the Aggies win, they’re in; no help required.

If they lose, the door isn’t shut they would need both an Alabama loss and an Ole Miss loss. If one or both of those fall into place, they would face Georgia, Alabama, or Ole Miss depending on outcomes across the league.

Alabama: Rolling with the Tide

Despite being the lowest ranked of the four contenders, Alabama still controls its path to the SEC Championship. Their head-to-head win over Georgia in Week 4 gives them a crucial tiebreaker.

The Tide head into a night game at Jordan-Hare Stadium in the Iron Bowl, one of the greatest rivalries in sports. A win that would put Alabama at 7–1 in the SEC and set up a rematch with Georgia in the conference championship.

Georgia: Pulling at the Leash

Georgia’s path is more complicated. Their résumé includes wins over then-No. 15 Tennessee (now No. 22), then-No. 10 Texas (now No. 16), and most importantly, No. 5 Ole Miss, giving the Bulldogsthe tiebreaker over the Rebels.

Because this week’s matchup against Georgia Tech is non-conference, the result doesn’t impact SEC standings. Georgia needs either an Alabama loss or an Ole Miss loss. If one of those teams falls, Georgia would finish 7–1 in the SEC and face Texas A&M.

Even if Georgia misses the SEC Championship, a win over Georgia Tech should preserve their No. 4 ranking and first-round bye in the College Football Playoff, giving them a significant rest advantage over G6 conference champions.

Ole Miss: The Rebels Needing Chaos

Ole Miss sits at 10–1, but their lack of quality wins has held them back. Their best victories came over LSU (who has since collapsed and is now unranked) and Oklahoma, who beat Alabama by two points in Week 12.

For Ole Miss, the path requires near-perfection, and help at every turn:

Win the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State.

Hope for an Alabama loss (which would drop the Tide to 6–2).

Hope for a Texas A&M loss.

If all three things happen, Ole Miss would win the tiebreaker through opponent winning percentage and face Georgia in a rematch of their Week 8 meeting. Ole Miss is also dealing with a big-time challenge, with the possibility of their head coach Lane Kiffin deciding to leave Ole Miss after the game. With offers coming from fellow SEC schools like Florida and LSU, and even ACC schools like SMU. The Rebels might have more than enough on their minds when they go out on the field on Friday.

The Schedule

Friday

12 ET – the Egg Bowl (No.7 Ole Miss @ Mississippi State)

3:30 ET – the game of Clean and Old-Fashioned Hate (No.4 Georgia @ No.23 Georgia Tech) at Mercedes Benz Stadium

7:30 ET – Lone Star Showdown (No.3 Texas A&M @ No.16 Texas)

Saturday

7:30 ET – Iron Bowl (No.10 Alabama @ Auburn)

SEC Network’s Top Championship Game Probabilities

1. Alabama vs. Georgia – 38%

2. Alabama vs. Texas A&M – 36%

3. Georgia vs. Texas A&M – 16%

4. Georgia vs. Ole Miss – 10%

In the end, though, this is college football, where certainty is a myth and where percentages are nothing more than numbers on a screen. The only guarantee? It’s going to be a wild weekend in the SEC.
