KANSAS CITY, Missouri - In the closing minutes of the Chiefs' close loss to the Chargers on Sunday, starting quarterback for the Chiefs Patrick Mahomes suffered an ACL tear. The Chiefs have also officially been eliminated from playoff contention, dropping to 6-8 on the season. A disappointing finish for a team that reached the Super Bowl last season, especially as Patrick Mahomes is not expected to return for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Mahomes underwent an MRI scan after the game that confirmed the injury. “Patrick and the club are currently exploring surgical options,” the Chiefs said in a statement posted on social media.
Despite the unfortunate news, Mahomes remains positive and hopeful for a speedy recovery, posting on social media, “Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I will be back stronger than ever.”
Patrick Mahomes seems extremely hopeful for the future, while others within the Chiefs’ might not be as certain. Travis Kelce is one of these players, voicing his frustrations this past Wednesday on the “New Heights” podcast, saying, “I feel like I’ve always had the answers in years past. And this year, I can’t find them…” He continues, “I keep thinking… it’s going to come together like it has in years past. And this year it’s just not, man.”
There will be discussions on the Chiefs' future; however, after seven straight playoff appearances, five Super Bowl appearances, and three national titles in the Mahomes era, the Chiefs aren’t going anywhere as a talented franchise.
As Mahomes relies heavily on his mobility and agility to move around defenders, the recovery process will be long and strenuous. The biggest question for the Chiefs is; how soon will he be available to practice and play? ACL injuries require extensive healing time, and we can only hope he makes a quick and speedy recovery.
